Free Car Seat with Medicaid: father carrying an infant car seat to the open door of a car

Car seats aren't a standard Medicaid benefit. Some Medicaid health plans include one as an extra for attending prenatal visits or classes, and local safety programs often provide free or low-cost seats.

Who to ask

  1. Your Medicaid health plan: call the number on your card and ask about pregnancy extras.
  2. The hospital or your OB's office: social workers often know about local programs.
  3. Your health department or WIC clinic: many have or know of car seat programs.
  4. Safe Kids coalitions: find local events at Safe Kids Worldwide.
  5. 211, for other local help.

Safety tips

Avoid second-hand seats if you don't know their history. A seat that has been in a crash, is expired or has been recalled may not protect your child. Free inspections by certified technicians can check your installation, and NHTSA has guidance and recall checks.

Also helpful

See free baby stuff, and free rides to appointments, but ask the ride service about car seats ahead of time. Check your eligibility.

What seat does your child need?

Babies and toddlers should ride rear-facing as long as the seat allows. Older children then move to a forward-facing seat, then a booster, as NHTSA recommends. Check height and weight limits and your state's law. A free fit check can catch common mistakes, and fire stations or hospitals may know where to find one.

Coverage during and after pregnancy

Pregnant people qualify at higher incomes than others aged 19–64, and nearly all states now keep coverage for 12 months after birth. Report your pregnancy and your baby's birth to the agency. Find your limit on your state calculator page or read our pregnancy and children guide.

Common questions

Does every Medicaid plan offer free car seats?

No. It depends on your state and plan.

Will a hospital give me a car seat?

Some have programs, but ask before your delivery date.

Do I need a car seat in a Medicaid ride?

Check with the transportation line. You may need to bring your own, and the driver may not be able to install it.

Can I get a car seat at a discount?

Local programs often sell low-cost seats and require a short class.
