Medicaid may pay for an Uber to a medical appointment in some states, but you can't just open the app and bill Medicaid. A provider, plan or transportation broker normally arranges it.

How it works

States run their ride programs differently. Some, like Arizona and Texas, have allowed rideshare companies as part of medical transportation. Your plan or a transportation broker decides what kind of ride fits your needs, so you may get a van or taxi instead.

How to ask for one

  1. Call your plan's or state's transportation line.
  2. Tell them your appointment details.
  3. Ask: "Can this trip be booked with a rideshare?"
  4. Keep your phone on, since many rides come with text updates.

Don't pay upfront by accident

Rides you book yourself in the regular Uber app usually won't be reimbursed unless your program has approved that in advance. If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, tell them. Rideshare may not suit you, and they must arrange an appropriate ride.

Which rideshare trips can be covered

Generally, only trips to covered medical care that your program approves. Rides to shop, work or see friends aren't covered by this benefit. Separately, some community programs and health systems pay for rides, and your clinic may have vouchers. Ask the front desk or social worker.

Tips for a smooth medical ride

  • Book as early as you can, and keep your confirmation number.
  • Ask whether a helper or child can come with you.
  • Have your clinic's phone number on hand in case you're late.
  • Ask about the return trip, and how to call when your appointment ends.
  • Say if you need a wheelchair van, door-to-door help or a car seat.

Where rides can take you

Rides are for Medicaid-covered care, such as doctor and dental visits, therapy, dialysis and pharmacy trips. States often ask you to confirm you have no other way to get there. Some use the nearest suitable provider as a guide, so ask ahead if you see a specialist further away.
