Medicaid generally doesn't pay for groceries. It does make you income-eligible for WIC if you also meet its other rules, and many Medicaid households qualify for SNAP or free food through local food banks.
Programs to apply for
- WIC: for pregnant and postpartum people, and children under 5. Medicaid generally meets the income test.
- SNAP: a separate application, but sometimes through the same state office.
- School meals: in many areas, Medicaid data can help certify children for free or reduced-price meals.
- Food banks: find one through Feeding America.
Food from your health plan
Some states and plans offer medically tailored meals, produce vouchers or healthy food cards for people with certain conditions. These aren't universal. Ask your plan or care manager. Read about free meals with Medicaid.

Applying for SNAP while on Medicaid
SNAP has its own rules, including income limits and, for some people, work rules. In many states, you can apply on the same portal as Medicaid. Have your household, income, rent and utility costs handy. If you have little or no income, ask about expedited benefits, which can arrive within days.

How to ask your plan about food benefits
Call the member number on your card and ask: "Do you offer meal delivery, a food card or nutrition counseling for my condition?" Ask your doctor to note any diet-related condition, such as diabetes, as this can affect eligibility.
