Medicaid won't pay for an iPhone. Lifeline companies usually offer basic Android phones, though some sell or promote refurbished iPhones, usually for a price.
How to use Lifeline with an iPhone
Many Lifeline companies let you bring your own compatible phone. That can be the simplest route: buy an unlocked refurbished iPhone, then apply the discount to your service.
Check before you commit
- Which model is it, and is it new or refurbished?
- What is the total you'll pay, including fees?
- Is it locked to that carrier, and for how long?
- How long will Apple keep updating that model?
The easier option
Most tasks, like calling your doctor, using plan apps and checking benefits, work fine on a basic smartphone. Read how free phones with Medicaid work. Need Medicaid first? Check your eligibility.
Be careful with any site or street table promising a free device. Don't pay a "processing fee", and share your Medicaid or Social Security number only with an approved Lifeline company or a government agency.
Does Medicaid help with any phone costs?
Medicaid doesn't pay for personal phones. Your plan may give extras such as a phone number for a 24-hour nurse line, which you can use on any phone. Some plans have support programs for members with complex needs. Ask whether any phone program is available in your plan.
