Free iPad from Government: young man at home holding a tablet with a blank screen

The US government doesn't have a free iPad program. Ads claiming otherwise are usually out of date, marketing for a private company, or scams.

How to spot a fake offer

  • It asks for a card number, gift card or "shipping fee" to release a free device.
  • It uses government-style logos but isn't on a .gov site.
  • It wants your Social Security number before saying which company it is.
  • It pressures you to act today.

Report suspicious offers to the FTC.

Real programs that can help

  • Lifeline, for a discount on phone or internet service.
  • Internet company low-income plans. See free internet with Medicaid.
  • State assistive technology programs, for people with disabilities.
  • Schools, libraries and senior centers that lend devices.

Video visits with your doctor

If you want a device for telehealth, ask your clinic or Medicaid plan. Some can help you get connected, or offer phone appointments. Read about government tablet claims or check whether you qualify for Medicaid.

What to do if you already gave your details

If you shared your Social Security number or card details with a suspicious site, contact your bank and watch your statements. IdentityTheft.gov offers a personal recovery plan. If you were enrolled in a phone plan you didn't request, call the Lifeline support center and your state agency.
