Free Tablet with EBT: woman at a produce market looking at a recipe on a tablet

EBT can't buy a tablet, because SNAP only pays for eligible food. Being on SNAP can still qualify you for Lifeline and low-cost device programs, some of which may lead to a free or discounted tablet.

What your SNAP status does

SNAP is one of the programs that qualifies you for Lifeline. You'd apply with proof of SNAP, such as an award letter. Some participating companies offer tablets as a promotion, but the program itself only discounts service.

Where to look

  • Lifeline companies in your ZIP code. Ask for the device model and total cost.
  • Refurbished sellers: PCs for People and similar nonprofits serve households on assistance.
  • Your library, which may lend devices.
  • Local charities, which you can find by calling 211.

Good to know

Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household, and you must recertify each year. If you're on SNAP you may also qualify for health coverage, so check your Medicaid eligibility. Other guides: iPads with EBT and laptops with EBT.

Be careful with any site or street table promising a free device. Don't pay a "processing fee", and share your Medicaid or Social Security number only with an approved Lifeline company or a government agency.

What proof of EBT or SNAP to use

Your EBT card alone may not be enough. Lifeline and many programs want a current award or benefit letter showing your name, the program and the date. You can usually get one from your state SNAP portal or local office. Cover your full card number if you share a copy, and only give it to a real program.

Who qualifies for Lifeline

Lifeline is the main federal program connected to Free Tablet with EBT searches. You can qualify in one of two ways:

  • Through a program: Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Tribal programs also qualify on Tribal lands. You can also qualify through a child or dependent in one of these programs.
  • Through income: at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, as shown below.

  • What is the total cost, including taxes, shipping and activation fees?
  • What happens to the device if I switch or stop service?
  • Is the device new or refurbished, and does it have a warranty?
  • How long will it get security updates?
