Free Laptop with EBT: woman at a table browsing groceries on a laptop

You can't buy a laptop with EBT. SNAP can qualify you for nonprofit refurbished computers and low-income internet plans, which is usually the cheapest legitimate way to get one.

Using SNAP status

Keep your SNAP award letter handy, as many programs accept it as proof. Don't assume you need to pay anyone to apply.

Where to look

  • PCs for People and other refurbishers.
  • Your SNAP Employment & Training program, if you're enrolled. Ask whether it can help with equipment.
  • Your school or college, if you're a student.
  • Local charities, through 211.

What to check before you buy

Ask about the warranty, whether the battery and charger are included, and how long the operating system will get updates.

More help

Compare tablets with EBT, or read about food help. SNAP households often qualify for health coverage too, so check your Medicaid eligibility.

Be careful with any site or street table promising a free device. Don't pay a "processing fee", and share your Medicaid or Social Security number only with an approved Lifeline company or a government agency.

Laptops for students on SNAP

If you're a student on SNAP, tell your college's financial aid office. Many have emergency grants or laptop loans. Continuing education programs and community colleges may provide devices during a course. For younger students, ask the school whether a device can come home.

Who qualifies for Lifeline

Lifeline is the main federal program connected to Free Laptop with EBT searches. You can qualify in one of two ways:

  • Through a program: Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Tribal programs also qualify on Tribal lands. You can also qualify through a child or dependent in one of these programs.
  • Through income: at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, as shown below.

Questions to ask before accepting any offer

  • What is the company's full name, and is it listed on the Lifeline website?
  • What is the total cost, including taxes, shipping and activation fees?
  • What happens to the device if I switch or stop service?
  • Is the device new or refurbished, and does it have a warranty?
  • How long will it get security updates?
