Free iPad with EBT: older man in a library looking at family photos on a tablet

There's no program that gives you a free iPad with EBT, and SNAP benefits can't be spent on electronics. Your SNAP status can open up discounted service and low-cost device options.

What EBT can unlock

SNAP qualifies you for Lifeline, and many internet companies consider SNAP for their low-income plans. Those savings can make it easier to afford a refurbished device.

Finding an iPad for less

  • Certified refurbished: check the warranty and how long the model will get software updates.
  • Nonprofit refurbishers: stock varies, and they more often sell Windows PCs.
  • Library or school loans: good if you need a device for a limited time.

Consider a different device

For forms, school and video calls, a cheap Android tablet or laptop often works just as well. Compare tablets with EBT and laptops with EBT. If you get SNAP, it's worth checking whether you qualify for Medicaid too.

Be careful with any site or street table promising a free device. Don't pay a "processing fee", and share your Medicaid or Social Security number only with an approved Lifeline company or a government agency.

Staying safe when buying refurbished

Check the seller's return policy and warranty, and make sure the iPad isn't locked to a previous owner's Apple Account. Ask the seller to confirm it can be erased and set up as new. Avoid paying by gift card or money transfer. If an offer sounds too good, look up the seller's reviews first.

Who qualifies for Lifeline
