Free Laptop with Medicaid: older man on a couch on a video call on a laptop

Medicaid doesn't provide laptops. Being enrolled can still help you qualify for refurbished computer programs and discounted internet.

Where to get a free or low-cost laptop

  • Refurbishing nonprofits: PCs for People and local groups sell to households on Medicaid and other assistance.
  • Job and training programs: your local American Job Center can tell you about help with equipment.
  • Colleges: many have laptop loan programs and emergency funds.
  • Vocational rehabilitation: your state agency may help workers with disabilities buy needed equipment.
  • Libraries: some lend laptops.

Getting online

Once you have a computer, see free internet with Medicaid and free hotspots.

Not enrolled yet?

Use our calculator to estimate whether you qualify. If you get SNAP instead, read free laptop with EBT.

Be careful with any site or street table promising a free device. Don't pay a "processing fee", and share your Medicaid or Social Security number only with an approved Lifeline company or a government agency.

Choosing a laptop that lasts

For a basic laptop, look for at least 8 GB of memory, a solid-state drive and a supported operating system. Chromebooks can be cheap, but check the automatic update expiration date. If you need a laptop for work, ask whether a workforce program can pay for one before buying it yourself.

Who qualifies for Lifeline

Lifeline is the main federal program connected to Free Laptop with Medicaid searches. You can qualify in one of two ways:

  • Through a program: Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Tribal programs also qualify on Tribal lands. You can also qualify through a child or dependent in one of these programs.
  • Through income: at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, as shown below.

2$29,214/yr

Questions to ask before accepting any offer

  • What is the company's full name, and is it listed on the Lifeline website?
  • What is the total cost, including taxes, shipping and activation fees?
  • What happens to the device if I switch or stop service?
  • Is the device new or refurbished, and does it have a warranty?
  • How long will it get security updates?
