Medicaid doesn't buy tablets for play or schoolwork. A child who needs a device for a medical reason, such as to communicate, may be able to get one through Medicaid's children's benefit, called EPSDT.

How EPSDT works

EPSDT is a mandatory benefit on the federal Medicaid benefits list. It requires states to provide medically necessary care for enrolled children under 21, even if that service isn't normally covered for people 21 and older. A communication device can fall under this.

How to request a device

  1. Talk to your child's doctor about communication needs.
  2. Get a speech-language evaluation.
  3. Have the provider submit the request and supporting records.
  4. If it's denied, ask for the reason in writing. You have the right to appeal.

For school and learning

Ask the school first, as many lend devices to students. If your child has an IEP, the team can consider assistive technology. For home, libraries often lend kids' devices, and Lifeline offers may help. Check whether your child qualifies, since children's limits are often higher than people aged 19–64'. You may also want free eyeglasses for kids.

Tablets for children with special needs

Beyond EPSDT, your state assistive technology program may let you borrow a device to try before you buy. Disability nonprofits sometimes offer grants, and Medicaid waivers for children may cover assistive technology. Keep a record of the therapy goals the device supports, because clear goals help with approvals.
