Free Internet with Medicaid: mother and daughter using a laptop at home with a router behind them

Medicaid doesn't pay for internet, but it can qualify you for Lifeline and for internet companies' low-income plans. Combining the two can reduce your bill and sometimes bring it close to free, depending on the plan.

Lifeline

Lifeline gives a monthly discount that can go toward home internet from a participating company. Check that your provider takes it.

Internet company low-income plans

Several large companies run reduced-price plans, such as Xfinity Internet Essentials, Access from AT&T and Spectrum's assistance plan. Eligibility differs, and not all accept Medicaid, so check current terms and prices with each company. Ask specifically: "Does Medicaid qualify me?"

Free options

  • Libraries, which often offer free Wi-Fi and lend hotspots.
  • Public housing or apartment programs, which sometimes include free Wi-Fi.
  • Your phone's plan. A Lifeline plan with data may be enough.

Tips

Ask whether you must buy or rent a router, and whether the price goes up later. Need a device? Read free laptop with Medicaid. Not enrolled? Check your eligibility.

Comparing low-income internet plans

Ask each provider for the same details: price after promotions, speed, data caps, equipment fees, and whether a credit check is required. Check that the plan serves your address. Speeds of about 25 Mbps can handle a video call for one person, while larger households may need more. Don't cancel current service until the new plan is active.

Who qualifies for Lifeline

Lifeline is the main federal program connected to Free Internet with Medicaid searches. You can qualify in one of two ways:

  • Through a program: Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Tribal programs also qualify on Tribal lands. You can also qualify through a child or dependent in one of these programs.
  • Through income: at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, as shown below.

Questions to ask before accepting any offer

  • What is the company's full name, and is it listed on the Lifeline website?
  • What is the total cost, including taxes, shipping and activation fees?
  • What happens to the device if I switch or stop service?
  • Is the device new or refurbished, and does it have a warranty?
  • How long will it get security updates?
